The Education Department
Welcome to education and learning at Chelsea Physic Garden.
We aim to connect people to plants in London’s oldest outdoor
classroom and to provide an inspiration and creative experience for
children and adults to remember.
The links to the left show the different areas of our educational
work.
Three Teacher training days for 2012
'Growing Understandings’ How to
develop, use, enjoy and sustain your school garden as a cross-curricular
resource – For Early Years, Key Stage 1 &
2 teachers.
Tuesday 27th March 2012, 10am-4pm
Wednesday 4th July 2012, 10am-4pm
Wednesday 19th September 2012, 10am-4pm
This training day aims to inspire and provide practical activities that will transform your school Garden in to a Learning Garden, to be used as a cross-curricular resource. There will be the opportunity to discuss ideas and top tips on how to sustain the Garden with the pupils as active participants. The day will include planting advice.
Course Providers
- Michael Holland is the Senior Officer for Schools & Community Learning at Chelsea Physic Garden (CPG) and has over 15 years’ experience delivering training days for adults and children in various environmental education topics here, Kew and at Holland Park Ecology centre.
- Xanthe Gresham was Storyteller in residence for the CPG and Stoke and Staffordshire Libraries. She is storyteller for the Tate Gallery and Lecturer in Drama and Storytelling at the University of East London. The British Museum states that working with Xanthe ensures first rate storytelling and first rate performance that forges powerful links with listeners. Commissioned epics have toured to the Smithsonian, the Ulster Museum and the Harvard Art Gallery.

We have been awarded the Learning Outside the Classroom Quality
Badge:
This provides for the first time a national accreditation combining
the essential elements of provision – learning and safety –
into one easily recognisable and trusted Quality Badge for all types
of Learning Outside the Classroom provider organisations. More

Family Activity Days in 2012
These will be held in all of the school holidays in 2012 (except for the Christmas holidays, but festive activities will be provided at the CPG Christmas Fair, Dec 1st & 2nd).
Some workshops are repeated and aimed at different age groups, for your convenience.
If you are (or know) a budding photographer, forensic scientist, naturalist, artist, or just love chocolate then read on…
Teachers' Evenings in 2012:
Weds 21st March, Wed 13th June, Thurs 20th September 2012, 4-6.15pm
Join us for an exclusive behind the scenes tour of the Garden and education facilities.
Perfect for those wanting to find out why this is a perfect place for a school or college trip. Staff will be on hand to answer your questions about creating your bespoke visit and what is involved.
Drinks and nibbles will be available.

A Teachers' Pack can now be downloaded (PDF/3.17MB). This will give you all the necessary information regarding a school visit.
Would you like us to visit your school with an assortment of plants, artefacts, animals and other resources?
The Education Department can now come to your school to speak at assemblies and run tailor-made workshops throughout the day.
The topics we have already taught in this way are: Plants that poison and cure, 17th Century medicine, Shelf Life, Animals and plants in the local environment, 'Literacy in the landscape', Materials, Olympic Plant Wreaths.
This Outreach Package is conditional of at least one follow-up visit to Chelsea Physic Garden.
It costs £300 for a full day and £150 for a half day.
