Family Activity Days in 2012

In 2012 we are holding approximately 35 events for families at London’s oldest outdoor classroom over 25 days.
These will be held in almost all of the school holidays in 2012 and some are repeated and aimed at different age groups, for your convenience.


If you are (or know) a budding photographer, forensic scientist, naturalist, artist, or just love chocolate then read on…

Art of the Garden
Come along to create art and craft inspired by the Garden. Try out printing, painting, sketching and model making using natural and recycled materials. To celebrate the UN year of the forest, there will be special focus on tree and leaf shapes.

Creepy Crawling
Discover the diverse world of animals with Vic Taylor from Mynewt Enterprises who will show his marvellous menagerie including a hissing cockroach, giant millipede, corn snake, giant African snail and Mr. Jelly Belly the tree frog. A Passion for Plants- gardening for beginners
Copme along to learn some gardening tips from our staff. How to: grow and care for plants, take cuttings, plant seeds, use containers and more.

Chocolate Tuesdays
Join us to look into the history and science of chocolate and celebrate this special substance. The day will include craft activities, a Garden tour, chocolate tasting and the chance to create your own mixture to take away. With a tasting session with Rococo Chocolates staff.

Garden Safari & Microscopic Marvels
If you enjoy discovering creatures, poisonous and insect-eating plants then this day is for you. A chance to explore the hidden secrets of the Garden including the jungle room and the creatures living in the pond.
For the 7+ event only: a chance to pond dip and use microscopes to observe familiar objects as well as creatures that live in a drop of pond water.

Garden Photography
Bring your camera or phone along to capture the Garden in striking and unusual ways. Advice on lighting and composition will be provided. There’ll also be the chance to have some of your pictures displayed on our online gallery.

Lotions & Potions - an introduction to herbal medicine
Find out something of the history of medicine and the amazing power of plants. Try your hand at making some of your own ointments, syrups and scented bags to take away.

The Lost Art of Nature Printing
Nature printing is a wonderful way of depicting and discovering plants, which was developed by physicians in the 15th century as an aid in the study of plants. Join designer and printmaker Pia Östlund for a one-day workshop at London’s oldest botanic garden. The day begins with an illustrated talk on the history of nature printing, followed by a printing session where you will learn how to make your own impressions using fresh plants and oil-based inks on paper.
You will also have the rare opportunity of viewing some exquisite nature printed books from the Garden’s collection of orginal botanical works.

Paper Stixx & Wonderful Wire Sculptures

We welcome the return of this popular activity run by artist, inventor and designer Darcy Turner. A great opportunity to have a go at making wonderful sculptures to take home, discover hidden talents and see paper and wire in a different way. See www.darcyturner.com

Flight Club: an introduction to things that fly

From pollen, seeds and insects to birds and humans- learn about the science and history of flight. We will be showing you how to make your own flying seeds, kites and paper aeroplanes. The day will also include close-up observation of the Garden’s flying insects.

CSI: Chelsea a forensic Biology workshop

Spend a day solving a crime and discover some handy tips from nature. This day is perfect for young scientists who are looking for practical scientific experience.

Pulp Fiction: An introduction to papermaking

Staff from environmental charity ecoACTIVE will be on hand to help you learn how to make your own paper using a variety of natural and recycled materials including petals, leaves and other things gathered from around the Garden. What’s the use of plants? Ethnobotany for beginners
Join us to discover the amazing variety of plants in our everyday lives. You will have used about 10 plants before arriving at the Garden – find out what they are. Our new Edible & Useful beds are full of stories linking us to the world of plants. The day will include using natural dyes and you’ll also have the chance to take your own useful plant home with you.
