Teacher Training

We can provide your school, or individual teachers with twilight (£30 per teacher), half day (£54 per teacher), or whole day (£108 per teacher) Continuing Professional Development (CPD), formerly INSET.

Wednesday 31st March 2010, 10am-4pm
Literacy & Numeracy in the Landscape -
For Early Years & Key Stage 1 teachers

This action packed day will give you many practical ideas and resources to make it easier for you to use the outside space you have available at near to your school to teach the following:

Literacy: reportage and nature diaries, fiction and non-fiction, poetry presentation and different word types. World renowned storyteller Xanthe Gresham will be leading a session on story structure and imaginative games.

Numeracy: (a)symmetry and patterns, sorting and classifying, areas, perimeters and volumes, growth and decay rates and age, data collection, handling and presentation, heights, temperatures and weights.

This day is open to teachers, support staff, school governors and others who are involved with teaching and inspiring children about plants and gardening.

Cost: £108 per person (including lunch)

Tuesday 25th May 2010, 10am – 4pm
‘Growing Understandings’: How to develop, use, enjoy and sustain your school garden as a cross-curricular resource
For Early Years & Key Stage 1 teachers

Summary
This training day aims to inspire and provide practical activities that will transform your school Garden into a Learning Garden, to be used as a cross-curricular resource. There will also be the opportunity to discuss ideas and top tips on how to sustain the Garden with the pupils as active participants. The day will include planting advice.

Objectives
1. To create a seasonal diary of Garden activities covering early developments, enjoyment and sustaining.
2. To give practical support to learning outside the classroom engaging in simple activities made from recycled and natural materials including ‘Grow your own Shelf Life’ exhibition and Recycled Gardens for wildlife.
3. To celebrate the ‘Year of food and Farming’ and how this can incorporate Numeracy, Literacy, Art, History and Geography.

Key stages
The day will cover Early Years and Key Stage 1. However all activities and information given is relevant to all Key stages.

Thursday 24th June 2010, 10am – 4pm

1. General environmental education (nature studies) –including habitats, food chains, food webs, plant and animal adaptations, environmental games,

4. 'Growing Understandings' - How to develop, use, enjoy and sustain your school garden as a cross-curricular resource.

5.'Cultivating Curiosity' - all you need to know to set up and maintain an organic school garden/gardening club (the cost of this session is £360 per school, and involves us visiting your school (London only) before and after the session).

These INSETs can be adapted for other Key Stages, if need be.

Ideally, these CPD sessions would be held at Chelsea Physic Garden, but if your school has access to green spaces nearby, we can come to you.
