About the event

Discover why Chelsea became one of the most creatively influential areas in the world. 

This illustrated lecture and film presentation traces the artists, movements and ideas that shaped the neighbourhood. It explores Elizabeth Blackwell’s pioneering botanical illustrations and Margaret Mee’s studies of Amazonian plants, alongside artists such as James McNeill Whistler and John Singer Sargent, who made Tite Street a centre of artistic life. 

The story continues through the creative explosion of the King’s Road during the 1960s, when art, music, fashion and youth culture transformed Chelsea’s international identity. 

The presentation is followed by a separately ticketed botanical illustration workshop. Lecture tickets may be booked independently.
