SOLD OUT Queer Botanical Sock Dyeing Workshop

Sunday 11 February 2024, 2pm-4pm
£15

As part of A Dash of Lavender: LGBTQ+ history month, join us for a nature printing workshop and create yourself a gorgeous pair of naturally dyed socks.

Historically, the LGBTQ+ community has often been referred to as ‘unnatural’, however, the ‘natural’ world has many characteristics that can be seen as queer. There is also a cultural link between queerness and the symbolism of flowering plants, which can be found in terms like ‘pansy’, or ‘a streak’ or ‘dash’ of lavender.

Plants have been used to dye textiles since ancient times owing to numerous plants being able to produce incredible colours. In this workshop you will be able to connect to nature in this way and discover how to naturally steam plant colour directly onto fabric using a mix of leaves, petals and extracts, resulting in a myriad of colour, reflecting the diversity of the LGBTQ+ community.

Whilst your socks are steaming, you will be taken on a tour of the Chelsea Physic Garden, stopping at several plants to view them from a new perspective and discover how queerness can be found in all corners of the natural world.

Booking information:

Tickets are £15 per person and includes your entry to the Garden that day. You need to purchase tickets for everyone attending the workshop.

Workshops last one hour and you are welcome to spend the whole day at the Garden,.

Please note:

  • One person will be admitted per ticket and each participant will have the opportunity to dye one pair of socks
