Embodied Surfaces: A Live Botanical Tattoo Performance

Saturday 17 August 2024, 11am-3pm

Join us this summer at Chelsea Physic Garden for Embodied Surfaces, a unique cross-disciplinary event exploring the connection between body art and nature. Celebrated botanical tattoo artist, Daniel the Gardener will create a custom tattoo inspired by the Garden’s medicinal plants. One audience member will receive this tattoo during the event, symbolising their bond with nature. Apply here to recieve the tattoo.

Chelsea Physic Garden, London’s oldest botanical garden, has a rich history rooted in the healing properties of plants. With over 4,000 plant species, it remains a vital green space for biodiversity and human connection to nature.

Embodied Surfaces investigates how individuals honour their connection to nature through botanical tattoos. By permanently adorning their bodies with plant imagery, participants weave themselves back into nature, showcasing their unique bond through these living artworks.

Daniel the Gardener’s tattoo practice aligns with the Garden’s mission to emphasise the importance of plants in our lives. His freehand botanical tattooing, renowned for its artistry and customisation, transforms personal morphology into botanical masterpieces.

This event includes:

  • A chance to explore Chelsea Physic Garden and meet fellow botanical tattoo lovers.
  • Live tattooing by Daniel the Gardener.
  • Exhibition of Daniel’s artwork and research in Chelsea Physic Garden.
