From 27 July to 28 August, you’ll notice some work on our Glasshouses as we carry out a programme of essential maintenance to help protect these much-loved buildings for years to come.
Completed in 1902, our Glasshouses are among the Garden’s most treasured features. Like all historic buildings, they require regular care and attention to ensure they remain in excellent condition. Following extensive restoration work in recent years, this programme of cyclical maintenance is an important part of preserving them for future generations of visitors, members and the plants they house.
What work is taking place?
Throughout the project, our specialist contractors will be:
- Thoroughly cleaning each Glasshouse, inside and out, including the blinds.
- Oiling the external timber structures to protect them from the elements and maintain their condition.
What to expect during your visit
To minimise disruption, the work will be carried out in phases, beginning at the western end of the Glasshouses and gradually moving towards our Horticulture Building.
As each section is worked on, it will be safely barriered off and temporarily closed to visitors. Once work has been completed and the area is safe, it will reopen before the next section is closed.
We’ll keep visitors updated throughout the project whenever access changes. If there hasn’t been an announcement that an area has reopened, please assume it remains closed.
The wider Garden will remain open as usual, with plenty to explore while these essential works take place.

We appreciate that some visitors may be disappointed if parts of the Glasshouses are temporarily inaccessible. However, this work is an important investment in the long-term care of one of Chelsea Physic Garden’s most significant assets.
