Messalina is remembered as one of the most controversial and notorious women to have occupied a position of power in the Roman Empire. Yet her scandalous reputation is based on anecdotes from male Roman historians which have defined her legacy.
In conversation with Dan Jones, up-and-coming author Honor Cargill-Martin will delve into the slanderous narrative of Messalina and reveal that the real story behind this fascinating figure of the ancient world is much more complex.
She will show a woman battling to assert her position in a world of Imperial Roman politics, whose intelligence, passion and ruthlessness allowed her to succeed.

About the speakers
Honor Cargill-Martin is an author, classicist and art historian. She has published a number of children’s fiction titles. Her latest book, Messalina, is her first non-fiction title.
Dan Jones is a historian, broadcaster and award-winning journalist. His books – including The Templars, Crusaders and, with Marina Amaral, The Colour of Time and The World Aflame – have sold more than one million copies worldwide. He has written and hosted dozens of TV shows, including the acclaimed Netflix/Channel 5 series, Secrets of Great British Castles.
