Cyanotype Printmaking-Plant Portraits for Beginners

Sunday 19 April 2026, 10am-3pm
£65

Explore the luminous world of cyanotype printmaking, using techniques pioneered by early photographers such as Victorian botanist Anna Atkins, whose striking blue botanical images helped fuel the fern fever of the nineteenth century.

Spend the day surrounded by plants in the historic setting of Chelsea Physic Garden, working slowly and attentively with botanical forms while learning about the origins of photograms, where science and art meet.

You will recreate delicate plant portraits and experiment with composition and exposure, producing vivid cyanotype prints to frame for the wall or turn into greeting cards.

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners. All materials and equipment are provided, just bring your curiosity and creative spirit!

When you attend this event, you’re supporting Chelsea Physic Garden’s charitable mission to protect and celebrate plant knowledge for future generations.
