Chelsea Physic Garden Glasshouse Restoration Conference - Monday 8th July 2024

In Spring 2021, Chelsea Physic Garden began a £3.2m restoration project of its historic Glasshouses to conserve, improve, reframe, and celebrate their built and natural heritage. As part of a National Lottery Heritage Fund, the restoration project has also given us the opportunity to design a new layout and approach to planting that will allow people to experience the whole plant life cycle, through moving our Propagation House out from behind the scenes. We have also created new displays and interpretation to shine a light on horticultural science and conservation, and expanded our community engagement and public programme with Help us Grow programmes that engage participants who may be suffering from isolation or barriers to engagement, and events such as Dash of Lavender as part of LGBTQ+ history month.

With the restoration finished in September 2023, celebrating the Garden’s 350th anniversary, we are inviting heritage and garden professionals to attend a day-long conference where we will be sharing our insights and lessons learnt from the 3 year project. This will include topics on restoration project mangement, organisational change, interpretation, fundraising, and engagement.

This is primarily aimed at institutions interested in the following:

  • Historic glasshouse restoration and project management
  • Reinterpreting collections
  • National Lottery Heritage Fund projects within heritage and garden spaces
  • Developing an activity or engagement plan

About the day

The conference runs from 10:30am – 4:00pm, with refreshments from 10:00am. We will also provide lunch. The conference will take place in the garden and gallery. Unfortunately, the gallery is not wheelchair accessible and has a 22-step staircase with a handrail.

We are able to offer 3 places per organisation and ask for a contribution of £10 per person to subsidise lunch. A small number of travel bursaries are available, please enquire with for more information.
