Chelsea Physic Garden recruited its first Youth Panel in spring 2022. The Panel is made of 10 people, aged 16-24, who represent a broad range of youth voices. The Panel help the Garden ensure that younger audiences are actively considered and engaged.

The Role

Chelsea Physic Garden wants to recruit up to 8 young people aged 16-24 to join our Youth Panel, which has 6 current members. Youth Panel members help make sure we represent and become a place for young people. You will have the opportunity to learn about the Garden and the work going on behind the scenes. You will have a key role in programming multiple events in the Garden. We want to build awareness of Chelsea Physic Garden in our local community and wider audiences across London and the U.K. Engagement with different audiences, including young people, is a key goal for us and we want to listen to and empower young voices to achieve this.

In 2024, the Youth Panel will be working to bring 2-3 events focused on young people into fruition. This follows on from the success of the Youth Panel Takeover Day in 2023. The Panel will work alongside Chelsea Physic Garden staff, including the Community & Youth Engagement Manager, Public Programme Manager and the Head of Learning and Public Engagement. Please note that this is not a gardening role.

The Youth Panel will meet up to twice a month on Thursday evenings at Chelsea Physic Garden or on Zoom for up to two hours. On the lead-up to planning an event or project, some additional time might be required but we will always discuss this with you.

  • A range of transferable skills e.g. budget management, teamwork, and communication skills
  • Knowledge of botanic gardens and plants
  • Support from, and opportunities to, collaborate with experienced staff at the Garden
  • Food, snacks and drinks provided at Youth Panel meetings
  • Travel to and from the Garden reimbursed up to a maximum of £15.00 per day
  • Opportunities to attend volunteer socials and other opportunities at the Garden
  • Aged 16-24
  • Happy to work as part of a team of peers and professionals who represent different views
  • Interested in learning new skills that are transferable to a career you choose
  • Keen to make culture and heritage sites more accessible and inclusive to young people by representing issues that matter to you
  • Able to attend two Thursday evening sessions in person or via Zoom every month

We welcome applicants from all sections of the community, as we want to reflect the diverse demographics of London residents. You don’t need to have volunteered before or visited Chelsea Physic Garden or any heritage site/garden.

Registrations for this role will close on Sunday 17 March 2024.

Shortlisted applicants will attend an informal chat in person or via Zoom on the 25, 26 or 27 March, which will include the Volunteer Manager and the Community and Youth Engagement Manager. We are happy to provide feedback to all applicants that ask for it, but will be unable to give everybody a place on the Youth Panel.
